How can I improve…today? Basketball season is well along (our 7th graders have already played 18 games) and coaches and players have to ask themselves how can I improve NOW? Do you understand? She said yes.
Reflecting on core “what matters” basketball stats, we know the difference makers -
- Shooting percentage differential
- Rebound differential
- Turnover margin
- Free throws taken
The “easiest” ways to enhance shooting percentage differential are to TAKE BETTER SHOTS (shot selection, the extra good pass) and to eliminate EASY BASKETS. There’s probably nothing that burns coaches more than seeing uncontested shots because of failed transition defense, missed defensive assignments, or worst of all…laziness.
If you can’t (or won’t) rebound on the defensive boards, then you lose on putbacks, as second and third shots nullify your initial effort. If you don’t block out, then you get the worst seat in the house, next to the coach. There’s no entitlement in basketball.
Take care of the ball. Cut away from defenders, pass away from defenders, and be aware of off-the-ball defenders.
Use hand discipline. Don’t reach in, apply pressure without fouling, and use your feet to get into GOOD defensive position. Don’t foul jump shooters and NEVER foul a three point shot. Stay vertical when contesting shots.
